Will Liverpool crumble if Virgil van Dijk is ruled out for the rest of the season?

Image
Virgil van Dijk is a world class defender, a leader and above all a professional player who knows ever detail of his job and how to do it.

He posses the aerial prowess to trouble any defense in the world, the incisive passes to build the game from the back and the vocal communication to speak to any player/defender and keep him check.

What really makes him special which Jurgen Klopp can attest is his desire to improve and help others improve as well.

The 27-year-old Dutch international have made Liverpool a world class team and today their European champions.

But the question remains, what will happen if Van Dijk is ruled out for the rest of the season? Will Liverpool's defense crumble or remain strong?

Jurgen Klopp was asked that very question during his press conference on Friday and he had this to say: 'I have 4 world class defenders who can play very well. If Van Dijk is injured; Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip can equally do the same job'.

But that's not true. None of this defenders posses the physical strength, aerial ability, emotional intelligence and world class mistiming and interceptions of  Van Dijk.

Van Dijk is not all about defending; he orchestrates the tempo of the game from the back and ensures the back line are in order and not out of shape.

He scores goals when the chances present itself and makes key interceptions or lunges to limit the number of shots Adrian or Alisson Becker gets in a match.

He makes Joel Matip believe in his undoubted quality and permits him to maraud forward and join the attack when the chance present itself.

His partnership with Joel Matip is the best Liverpool have had in 14 years. But men are world class which is why Liverpool are the prime candidates to win the Premier League and Champions League.

But if Van Dijk do get injured {hopefully not the rest of the season}, it will certainly shake Liverpool but only if Joel Matip can regurgitate everything he has learned from Van Dijk and become the leader at the back.

Europe League beckons: Why Jurgen Klopp is very worried about Salzburg

The reigning European champions are on the verge of exiting the competitions in the round of 16.  Liverpool could become the second team in 10 years to exit the Champions League in the group stage since AC Milan. But to prevent that from happening Jurgen Klopp's men must beat Salzburg at Red Bull Arena which frankly is no easy feat.  Salzburg is no push over and Klopp know this. He watched as Jesse Marsch men came back from a 3-0 defeat in the first half to draw 3-3 in the second half. It took a moment of pure genius from Mohamed Salah to find the winning goal and salvage respect from the home side.  Now, Austria team have an opportunity to create history, they've the chance to dump Liverpool out of the Champions League by beating them at home and progressing to the round of 16.  It won't be easy though but why would you doubt them knowing that Liverpool's defence is very weak and porous.  This season, the Reds have played 9 games at Anfield...
